And all of it is done with great insight and humour.My first published, “successful” piece of game content was The Raphael Parable, a little exploration game about wandering through an impossible office. I personally have not played through all the endings I look forward to doing so and exploring further and one can play the game for hours as each path or choice presents so much more content to explore and consider. The result is a highly enjoyable and immersive experience. The game offers a complex environment, a variety of choices, explores real-world themes and concepts and employs different methodologies. In terms of our recent readings it employs many of the concepts and suggestions in Flanagan’s designing for critical play article.
The “Stanley Parable” is a highly innovative and different way to look at games and to consider the issues of choice, “destiny”, the effects of boredom and complacency and paying attention to the world around you.

You simply proceed through the narrative in the many different ways until you think you’ve worked through all the combinations and discovered all the possible endings.įans of the game have created a great deal of content around the game including full wiki’s of maps and decision trees describing all the possible choices: The game tries to push you towards a particular choice, you ignore it, you eventually come back to another “life” and end up having to make those choices to see what other possible endings there are. Its a difficult game to describe because its not a typical game. With each new “life”, the character “Stanley” may have forgotten all his other attempts but you as the player have not and neither has the game engine often presenting you with rooms and paths affected by the story line that was completed before it. another opportunity to proceed through the adventure but with different choices, additional content that wasn’t there before and sometimes hilariously different results. It’s tagline is “the end is never the end” because just when you thought you’ve run out of choices and paths and routes through the games, you are presented with another “life” i.e. The “hero” of this story is an office worker, the story line is about choice but, more importantly about the illusion of choice in light of what a game designer has chosen as the path forward for you. What is unique about this game is that while it may be categorized as an exploration/adventure game it challenges the usual conventions and narratives we see in mainstream games. One of the modes is called the “adventure line” with the yellow line you may follow comicly going in impossible places like up a wall or along a ceiling. Here is an example of one of the possible endings called “Escape”:Īnother interesting feature of this game is that it remembers what choices you made before it, so as your first pass through the game will generate a particular ending, each attempt presents the office and the rooms in a slightly different manner.
There are apparently over fifteen possible endings. The map or layout itself is rather “maze” like but as you go through the rooms with a very confusing building layout.Īs you proceed you begin to quickly see that the choices you take influence what happens. The narration recognizes you aren’t following directions and will chastise or critique “Stanley” for not following rules. The narration also covers Stanley’s inner monologue, his thoughts, his fears. perhaps to go straight or take another open door. For example the narrator will tell you “Stanley took the first open door to the left”, but as a player you can ingore that and make another choice i.e. He presents you with choices…but you don’t have to follow his directions. The entire game is narrated with a voice over as you walk through the rooms. You are “Stanley” walking through the hallways. Progressing through the entire video demonstrates the first narrative and “story line” you an take. Mechanics-wise it is entirely first person. The first two minutes gives you a sense of the introduction.
